With prom season in the midst, I’d like to appropriately discuss the film Pretty in Pink...I mean, Molly Ringwald’s pink prom dress is iconic! The movie tells the story of a poor girl (Andi played by Ringwald) who must choose between the love of her childhood sweetheart and a rich playboy. This Brat Pack favorite helped define the teenage romance genre — Andi, Blaine, and Duckie’s love triangle is one of the most famous in film history.
This film is more than just a great story, though — it has some truly inspiring fashion! Andie’s snobby peers didn’t stop her from having a bold sense of style! She creates a 80s-tastic prom dress from a hand-me-down, thrift store buy. The pink prom dress inspired girls everywhere and carried the message that old clothing could be made new again. I love that this dress represents many aspects of 80s fashion and that it encouraged women to embrace vintage and get creative with their clothing. Andi definitely was an originator of the “grandma chic” teen girl aesthetic (sorry, Tavi). End result: she makes them all look like jerks...and gets the guy!
